A bold, one-woman journey - heart, humour and home truths!
Roti Queen is a bold, one-woman show by multi-disciplinary creative Shika Budhoo - a rich blend of sharp comedy, raw honesty, and Bollywood rhythm.
Marriage is a dance between love, sacrifice, and identity. Amrita, once a professional dancer, now marks her 19th anniversary by making a fresh batch of rotis - unravelling a life of domestication, devotion, and dance.
Set in a Durban kitchen alive with music, memory, and mischief, Amrita kneads, flips, and fries while navigating family expectations, nosy friends, and a melting marriage. But behind the jokes, gossip, and flour-dusted charm, Amrita is quietly turning inward, sifting through the choices that have shaped her life and the woman she has become. As memories and melodies rise with the heat of the stove, she begins to see her story with new eyes - not as something lost, but as something still unfolding. In the rhythm of her hands and the music in her heart, a gentle but powerful question lingers: what might be possible if she chose herself, too?
With Budhoo’s signature mix of comedy, pathos, and cultural storytelling, she delivers a captivating solo performance, shifting effortlessly between characters, accents, and generations — from chaotic family moments to the ache of loneliness, holding the audience in every beat.
Vibrant, funny, and deeply human, this one-act play with dance is a celebration of resilience, where a woman rises — soft, strong, and perfectly round — like the roti she makes.
