With only three rounds left to run, the action in the 2022 Power Series presented by Wingfield Motors at Killarney is heating up along with the weather. There are championship titles in the balance in almost every discipline at Round 7 of the series on Saturday 3 September and you can expect some titanic confrontations.
This definitely includes the biggest category in terms of numbers, the combined Laude Classic Cars and BEJO Trustees Fine Cars, where the previously almost unbeatable Franco Donadio and his Ford Escort Mk1 have been given a torrid time throughout this season by challengers as diverse as Michael Hitchcock’s Cross Cape Forklift Services Mustang and Charles Artons’ superbly prepared Datsun 240Z. If Donadio is to have any chance at all of retaining his Classic Car title, this is where it will have to start – expect fireworks.
But wait, as they say, there’s more, with a full programme of races for the Alert Engines GTi Challenge, the combined Pirelli V8 Masters and Kaltron Formula Supercars, and the superbly competitive Formula Libre single-seaters, who are enjoying a huge comeback this season with near-record fields and cliff-hanger contests, as well as the sixth running of the Ons Huisie 100 over 31 laps for Spitfire Furniture Sports & GT cars.
Motorcycle racing fans haven’t been left out either, with three two-wheeler categories in action on the day, from the entry-level Bridgestone Super Twin Cup 650 and Super Sport 300 Motorcycles – ‘brat pack’ racing at its best! – to the superbikes of the Strato Technology Clubman/Classic/Breakfast Run Motorcycles and the South Superbikes/Superbike Challenge/Masters/600s, the premier league of motorcycle racing in the Western Cape.
Pre-book at Computicket or pay at the gate; Qualifying starts at 8:00am and you get a whole day of world-class motor racing on two and four wheels for R80 for adults, R20 for scholars under 16 and free for children under 12; Western Province Motor Club members also get in free on production of their membership books at the gate.
There’s ample parking all around the circuit, so bring your beach umbrella or gazebo, bring your picnic basket and your cooler box, light up your skottelbraai, park next to one of our brick braais, or just pick a spot on one of our shaded grandstands and make the day your own.
Or you can warm your hands at the friendly fire on the Clubhouse balcony and enjoy delicious hot food from the Trackside Pub and Grill along with superb views of the fastest corner at Killarney, the double-apex Malmesbury Sweep.
There are outlets around the facility serving hot snacks and cold beverages – as well as children’s play areas, including the famous Kiddies’ Korner, the coolest party zone on the West Coast, which is available for hire year-round. On Race Day your kids get to use it absolutely free!
Spectators are free to move around throughout the day; grab a spot on the free shuttle service and watch the action from different vantage points. The pits are always open to spectators, so you can also see the cars and motorcycles up close.
