The 2023 Power Series gets underway on Saturday 4 February in the only way we know how – at full throttle, with Wingfield Motors back for their 10th season as the sponsor of Killarney’s Regional championship series.
With a number of new entrants as well as some familiar names fielding new cars or motorcycles, the racing will be wildly unpredictable, but it will be intense and very close as challenges are thrown down and accepted, new contenders emerge and the 2023 pecking order is established.
Topping the bill are the Thermo Fires Clubmans, where a gaggle of Golfs will take on a squadron of Blue Propeller sixes, while the all-Volkswagen Alert Engine Parts GTi Challenge provides some of the closest racing to be seen anyway – and we mean that in both senses of the word. The GTi Challenge isn’t supposed to be a contact sport but these closely-matched contenders are renowned for robust racing!
The same is true of the Pirelli V8 Masters: the cars are identical, so winning is down to skill, nerve and how badly you want it.
The Laude Classic Cars bring back a golden age of racing in South Africa, when local drivers and race car engineers could take on the best in the world – and did – while the Spitfire Furniture Sports and GT races attract a wide variety of high-tech custom built race cars and wildly modified performance road cars. It’s no surprise that the ultimate lap record at Killarney is held by one of these rocket-ships.
For this event they will be joined by a number of international visitors, including two Ford GT40s, a Lotus Elan and a McLaren M6B.
But for a generation that grew up with Schumacher, Vettel, Hamilton and Verstappen on TV there’s nothing like the open-wheelers of the Formula Libre Category. While the top contenders are in a class of their own, the Formula Vee ‘brat pack’ can be counted on to deliver some of the tightest racing of the day.
For both of motorcycle categories – the South Superbikes/Superbike Challenge/Masters/600s and the Strato Technology Clubman Motorcycles/Classic Superbikes & Breakfast Runners - the whole circuit is an overtaking opportunity and you can expect to see them taking full advantage of that: Anything could happen and usually does!
