South Africa’s premier motorsport series, the national championship Extreme Festival, is back at Killarney on Saturday 17 September – and the tension is ratcheting up! This is the penultimate round of the 2022 series and there are South African titles at stake in each of the national categories.
For almost all the top drivers, the trip to the home of motorsport in the Western Cape is crunch time. Many Gauteng-based contenders face a make-or-break situation at an ‘away venue’ while the local heroes who compete at national level will want to make the most of their home-ground advantage – in particular top contender Jurie ‘Umpie Swart’
In some ways Killarney offers a more level playing field than the more regularly used inland circuits; expect the racing to be tight, close and very robust!
There are races for the G&H Transport Extreme Supercars, GTC & Supa Cup cars, the CompCare Polo Cup, the Gazoo Racing SA Cup, and, for open-wheel fans, the Investchem Formula 1600’s and Formula Ford Kent single-seaters.
In addition, our very own Thermo Fires Clubmans Saloons will be joining the National categories for a round of their closely-fought Regional Series. All the local heroes want to be part of the Extreme Festival action, so expect a big entry and seriously hard racing!
Pre-book your spectator tickets via Computicket or pay at the gate - R100 for adults, R40 for scholars under 16 and free for children under 12; Western Province Motor Club members also get in free on production of their membership book at the gate.
There’s family fun for everyone at the Extreme Festival, with children’s play areas where the youngsters can burn off their excess energy, including the famous Kiddies’ Korner, the coolest party zone on the West Coast, which is available for hire year-round; on Race Day your kids get to use it absolutely free!
Bring your beach umbrella or gazebo, bring your picnic basket and your cooler box, light up your skottel braai or park next to one of our brick braais. The pubs are open and there are outlets all round the facility serving hot snacks and ice-cold beverages.
There are ice-cold drinks available from your host Carel can der Merwe at the Trackside Pub and Grill, upstairs at the Clubhouse, as well as delicious meals from chef Melicia Hosking of Café Solutions, supported by students from the College of Cape Town.
The Tuck Shop on the ground floor of the Clubhouse provides traditional take-aways such as burgers, boerewors rolls, hot dogs, and brekkie buns, as well as chicken strips ‘n dip, fully loaded fries with sauce and bacon bits, and our new ‘box of nibbles’, along with beverages to drink in the beer garden.
The Joubert Pits Lounge features signature specials - the high-octane Winners’ Breakfast and the fully-loaded Champion Burger - plus cold beverages, while Louis Powell at the Bull Bar and Wat-a-Burger are there for the old-school spectators on the stands and Halaal food is available from Hoosain’s, just next door to the Joubert Pits.
Nobody says you have to watch all the races from the same spot; you can catch a free shuttle ride and watch the action from different vantage points throughout the day. The pits are also open to spectators so you can see the cars and motorcycles up close.
